I am a SDE 1 with a total of 2.5 yoe out of which 1 is in Amazon, I am quite happy with the team I am on and work here is also interesting, my performance was a bit below avg according to me but no performance issue as per manager, I recently interviewed with zeta and got offered sde 2 with 42 TC, I am not sure if switching would be a good idea at this point and wondering if I should wait another year and try for promotion here itself. Looking for advice on this.

PS :- zeta will have it's IPO in 2026 and it might be a good chance to switch and start getting those stocks.

Edit :- please share the reason also in comments

TC 23 LPA
Yoe 2.5
Offered 42 LPA

Pretty sure that Amazon SDE 2 earns more than that, internal promotion get almost that much. WLB can be a plus not so sure about work though since I am actually learning a good amount here in Amazon also.

I can confirm this is really not true. Have worked at both. Amazon SDE2s are of way better quality and earn better too

Even God be cannot be so sure of Zeta going to IPO in 2026. It depends on a lot of factors.

Ex-Amazonian here. Working in Amazon for a long time will train you to handle almost anything in life. You wonโ€™t get the best compensation though. Zetaโ€™s IPO can be a motivating factor but no one can say for sure itโ€™s going ipo in 2026. Also thatโ€™s a long time, what if you want to quit before that? Will they allow you to hold your vested stocks?

While I was there I too lived under the fear of pip. But there are ways to navigate around it - first one is to give your best second one is never badmouth people whoโ€™ve โ€œearned trustโ€ of senior leadership. Iโ€™d say in your next 1-1 ask your manager that youโ€™d want to work towards a promotion and what is the time under their guidance for you to achieve it. I can assure you itโ€™s going to be longer than what they say. But you start working towards it because of one simple reason - they wonโ€™t lie about your growth areas. If you get promoted itโ€™s good for you otherwise you still worked for it so you came out a better engineer. If youโ€™re promoted internally your pay raise wonโ€™t be that great but 3 months post that you can get another raise by switching (if you want to switch) and while youโ€™re working for a promotion keep interviewing once in a while, who knows if a solid offer comes your way.

Thanks that makes sense, I am also inclined towards staying only but wanted to ensure that's not a mistake and upcoming olr does have a bit adverse affect on me due to fear of URA quota/pip but trying to overcome that.

For zeta if base + bonus per year is 40+ then you can join, stock appreciation is not great in Amazon since bezos announced his decision, I got 36 bonus +5 joining bonus and 5 retention bonus at end of 1st year, 6 months back. Had 3 yrs experience and also from Amazon ๐Ÿ˜
